Set against the background of Florida's Cypress Gardens, and featuring many stretches of water carnival-ballet numbers, the slight story line finds swimming star Julie Hallerton (Esther Williams) in love with Ray Lloyd (Van Johnson), her boss and the creator and operator of the operation. She stays mostly wet, while he stays mostly disinterested in anything other than the cash receipts.

Easy to Love Esther

What's good: beautiful Esther Williams. Enough can't be said about this. She was positively radiant the entire film. No actress brought technicolor to life like Esther Williams. Tan, fit, gorgeous Esther. Also the great Busby Berkeley aquatic numbers. Esther Williams plus Busby Berkeley equals a win every time.

What's bad: the men. Unfortunately, Esther is saddled with rather poor love interests here in Tony Martin and Van Johnson. There's no great chemistry to be had with either but Martin tries his soggy best. I definitely felt like he was attracted to Esther, although in a kind of scuzzy greaseball sort of way. He also has several terrible songs. MGM was pushing him extra hard in this. He wouldn't stop singing those terrible songs! I like Van Johnson but he's as exciting a male lead as a wooden plank. So bland and colorless. Esther really had some crappy choices here.

Honestly it's not one of the greats. The plot of Esther wanting Van but all he thinks about is business so she tries to make him jealous with Tony is pretty flimsy and the romance is blechh. But see it for the stunning Esther Williams in technicolor and the wonderful production numbers choreographed by the great Busby Berkeley.

That Hostess With The Mostess

Movie audiences got a treat in Call Me Madam because they got to see Ethel Merman repeat one of two of her Broadway roles for the screen, the other being in the first Anything Goes.

For some reason, movie audiences never really took to Ethel. She did some parts during the Thirties, but in the Forties worked exclusively on Broadway. Mary Martin suffered a similar fate and we never got to see any of her Broadway starring roles with the exception of the famous telecast of Peter Pan.

Irving Berlin wrote the score for Call Me Madam and the book is based on the colorful life of Perle Mesta, famous Washington socialite who Harry Truman made ambassador to Luxembourg.

That's the way of things in Washington. Both parties with a new administration give ambassadorships out to wealthy contributors and Perle Mesta, an oil widow was one of the wealthiest.

Ethel is appointed by President Truman as Ambassador to the mythical duchy of Lichtenburg. Her rather informal style sets some professional State Department teeth rattling and during the course of the film both causes and solves a diplomatic crisis. Her personal assistant, Donald O'Connor is in her corner, but the chief of Protocol Billy DeWolfe is at his wit's end.

Both Ethel and Donald find romance in Lichtenburg, she with Count George Sanders and he with Vera-Ellen. When things aren't looking so good, they console each other with the hit song of Call Me Madam, You're Just In Love. This is what you call a contrapuntal melody with both members of the duet singing different melodies at the same time. At the same time this one was hitting the jukeboxes, another contrapuntal by Berlin, Play A Simple Melody was revived by Bing Crosby and his son Gary. To my knowledge no other major composer has ever had a hit with one of those.

George Sanders surprised quite a few folks with his singing voice. They needn't have been, he in fact had appeared in some musicals on the London stage before going into film. And he drops the sneer that usually accompanies most of us film characters and makes a most dashing and romantic count.

Dropped from the film version was Irving Berlin's tribute to Dwight D. Eisenhower which became his campaign theme song, I Like Ike. I guess it was considered redundant since the American people already had him. There are many references to Harry in the book and how Ethel was going to not let him down in the position he placed her in.

Billy DeWolfe steals every scene he's in as the fussy officious career foreign service employee, Pemberton Maxwell. If there ever was a name for a stuffy career WASP diplomat, that's it. They were a ripe target back then, certain politicians made a living on accusing a whole flock of them as traitors. One of them was Truman's Secretary of State, Dean Acheson. There manner didn't play well in what we would now call red state America.

Call Me Madam is bright and funny with a great score and some fabulous performances. Can't do better than that.

Deadwood, Dakota Territory, is largely the abode of men, where Indian scout Calamity Jane is as hard-riding, boastful, and handy with a gun as any; quite an overpowering personality. But the army lieutenant she favors doesn't really appreciate her finer qualities. One of Jane's boasts brings her to Chicago to recruit an actress for the Golden Garter stage. Arrived, the lady in question appears (at first) to be a more feminine rival for the favors of Jane's male friends...including her friendly enemy Wild Bill Hickock.

Review :

Doris Day's shining hour

In the early fifties, Hollywood had to find a way to draw audiences who were staying home and watching television, and "Calamity Jane" was one of the best musical efforts to get them into the theaters. This movie's redeeming quality is its high spirits. They never let up. The Deadwood community that James O'Hanlon rustles up is a motley bunch of soldiers, scouts, prospectors and farmers, and they all have a good time giving one another a hard time--none more so than the title character played by Doris Day. Her performance probably owes something to Betty Hutton's Annie Oakley, and it looks an awful lot like what Billie Hayes and Irene Ryan had been doing years afterwards, but Day dons a buckskin suit and tears right into the role like it was a tailor's fit.

I don't think I have to go into the rumor about the real Calamity Jane to point out how daring Day's work is. Hollywood might have sanitized history (or maybe not), but Day is as close to being Martha Jane Canary as anyone is likely to be in a time when drag acts were something no one ever talked about. And she is lucky to have some of the best movie music of that year (or maybe any year when you consider what now passes for good). Sammy Fain and John Francis Webster took the Oscar for best song, yet the ones that weren't in the running are every bit as good.

How can you pass up a musical that delivers the deeply satisfying baritone of Howard Keel? When he bursts out with joy in "Higher than a Hawk," the light from the screen surges, and you feel like you're resting on a sunlit cloud right next to his. His smile matches Day's for brightness, and as they ride through the Black Hills singing harmony, even the birds seemed to have stopped to listen. It's a beautiful pairing that I don't think ever happened again.

"Calamity Jane" may not be everyone's cup of tea. If you're looking for history, this is not the place to go. But stop by, and Day and Keel and Dick Wesson and Allyn Ann McLerie and Paul Harvey and company will more than tickle your fancy. They'll keep you humming for days.

Directed by David Butler who has given us over the years a string of felicitous moments to remember from Will Rogers in "A Connecticut Yankee," to Jane Withers in "Bright Eyes," to the Ritz Brothers in "Kentucky Moonshine," to Bob Hope in "Road to Morocco," to S.Z. Sakall in "Lullaby of Broadway" and on and on and on.

Doctor in Trouble...

Though the 1970s were the heyday for British TV spin-offs, author Francis Durbridge's serials, notable for each episode's cliffhanger ending, were among the first to transfer to the big screen twenty years earlier.

Here, Mark Fenton, a hospital doctor or possibly consultant as he is addressed as Mister, becomes ensnared with the double-dealing members of a crime ring after falling for the glamorous Della Freeman. Fenton appears to have more time on his hands than most members of his profession and he appeared in a similar adaptation OPERATION DIPLOMAT, played by Guy Rolfe. A likable cast includes Robert Beatty, with his decidedly Canadian accent as Fenton, while Elizabeth Sellars, an excellent and somewhat under used actress plays Della, looking classy and elegant in a sumptuous array of furs and hats. There's also two celebrated specialists in sinister foreigners for British films and TV, Ferdy Mayne and Roger Delgado.

The only film of Director Martyn C. Webster, a BBC radio producer whom had worked with Francis Durbridge on the Paul Temple series starring Peter Coke; he ensures it gets off to a flying start. Durbridge's thrillers and series were always gripping and enjoyable despite his over use of certain plot devices. See for example the similarities in a more polished adaptation of his work, Gerald Thomas's THE VICIOUS CIRCLE (1957), also featuring a doctor in trouble.

Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun

If you liked "The Princess Bride," you'll probably enjoy this movie.

This is a must see for Richard Greene (Robin Hood) fans. He gets to play twin brothers Mario and Carlos. He is fine and dashing in both roles. Mario is his standard square jawed hero, but Carlos is a more flawed and complex character. He even gets to disguise himself as he often did in his Robin Hood television series, and play a third role as a gypsy fortune teller.

The story reminds one more of Zorro than Robin Hood in style. The settings and combination of swords and pistols for fighting also gives it that Zorro feel.

Raymond Burr is delightful as the villainous Baron. He is given nice support by Lee Van Cleef as his henchman. It is nice to see them both this youthful before they became stars in the 1960's.

Paula Raymond and Dona Drake are the beautiful female companions of Richard Greene's brothers. This was the beginning of Paula Raymond's career before she became a staple of dozens of 1950's and 1960's adventure television shows. It is towards the end of songstress Dona Drake's movie career. Both are fine in rather small supporting roles.

The movie moves quickly with lots of action scenes. It is just very well done and professional, albeit standard Hollywood entertainment in the 1950's.

Review :

Hi, I'm Will Rogers

Will Rogers, Jr. stars as his own father Will Rogers in what many critics say is one of the best of movie biographies ever. Will, Jr. even asked that nothing be added to over-dramatize or embellish the storyline of the movie. He wanted his father to speak for himself. That's what they said on TCM. If you love film biographies, or like Jane Wyman, or if you have never heard of Will Rogers and want to know more about him, then you're in for a treat. Costarring James Gleason, Slim Pickens, Mary Wickes and Eddie Cantor as himself, this film has more heart and respect for its subject matter in one minute, than a lot of other movie biographies have in the whole film, especially musical biographies. This film shows how one man made a difference in the lives of others by being himself and that he is still being loved and remembered today.

This is one of my favorite movies ever! A wonderful period piece, with a light hearted love story line. Granger, of course, is in his element acting these types of roles. The story line is set in France during the pre-revolutionary and revolutionary times. Granger is a B*****d in search of his family, and mistakenly believes he is from a certain family.... this and a friendship with a revolutionary writer, give him a fun run for his money! You have to see it at least once.... it is SO good!

Enjoyable albeit routine Tim Holt western.

Two cowboys (Tim Holt, Richard Martin)help cattle drivers against a ruthless land baron (Stanley Blystone) by stealing from him and giving the drivers the money so that they have enough money to buy a permit from him that will allow them to move their cattle across his land.

Watchable Tim Holt western, typically fast paced and quite enjoyable, albeit routine. There are a number of shoot outs, bar room brawls and obligatory love interests thrown in to please fans of the genre looking for a decent time waster. Holt ensures that the audience knows that he and Martin are inspired by Robin Hood by explicitly making reference to the famed man's deeds.

B movie starring Cesar Romero

"Lady in the Fog" is a 1952 film starring Cesar Romero as an amateur detective, Philip O'Dell, an American currently in London. He helps a woman (Lois Maxwell) whom he meets in a bar - her brother was run down by a car in the heavy London fog, but she is convinced that it wasn't accidental. O'Dell investigates, and finds himself involved with an old case, a mental hospital, a filmmaker, and a nightclub.

Romero is a delightful actor, and this story has a lot of comedic elements which he acquits very well. He was very underrated, which is clear if one sees him in "The Captain from Castile" and "Julia Misbehaves." The story of "Lady in the Fog" is about as lame as it gets and pretty easy to figure out. It's made on the cheap. Romero is always worth seeing, though.

Watch Retreat, Hell! Trailer :

Review :

A Long-Ago War

The movie traces Marine combat battalion from training base in California to South Korea's Inchon landing to North Korea's Chosin Reservoir and retreat from there to the coast for naval rescue.

Several notable features are in this otherwise fairly routine war film. First, it's surprisingly de-politicized for its sensitive time period. The movie was produced in 1952, at a time when the war in Korea had stalemated and anti-communist fervor (Senator McCarthy) was at a fever pitch stateside. One would expect a lot of talk about red aggression and Chinese hordes. However, there's hardly any explanation in the narrative about where the war is or why it's occurring! Instead, the screenplay focuses almost exclusively on Marine Corps professionalism from officers to NCO's to recruits.

Looks to me like the movie's purpose is to restore the Marines' popular image following the Chosin debacle, without getting involved in messy politics. After all, Marine combat in WWII had been one of steady advance across the Pacific; at the same time, footage of retreat in Korea shook American confidence in that murky war.

Another notable feature is the low-budget film's effort at recreating the horrendous winter weather that plagued the retreat. I recall newsreels of the time of the steep mountains and freezing snow being almost as scary as the combat itself. I doubt the retreat over those mountain passes would have succeeded without the continuous air support.

Notable too is the general absence of sometimes silly small talk that characterizes so many WWII combat films. That's understandable since the war in Korea was never popular and little understood at home, especially after the massive Chinese intervention. On the other hand, there's the kind camaraderie and bonding among the troops that could be expected, but none of the light-hearted victory-is-certain banter of 10-years earlier.

As other reviewers note, the combat itself is mostly a series of clichés. However, the acting is good and Tamblyn is perfect for his idealized all-American-boy role. But the movie itself is now largely a curiosity dramatizing as it does one of America's few military retreats.

(In passing—in my little book, the war was characterized by two massive blunders—first, North Korea's reckless belief that the US would tolerate a unified communist Korea only a few hundred miles from post-war Japan; and second, Gen. MacArthur's over-confident belief that China would somehow allow an American army on China's border the Yalu river. The result of these blunders was 3-years of war, thousands of dead, and most ironically, a return afterward to the same divided country 38th Parallel as before the devastation!)

Have people who rated this movie actually seen it?

People who were watching movies before the days of VCR might remember this one. As of July 17, 2004, 49 IMDb users had rated this film that's been unavailable anywhere except at special museum showings. As of February 18, 2009, 130 IMDb users have rated it. How many of them have actually seen MY SON JOHN(?) Any how many rated it based on its notoriety?

I'd like to hear from those people who've seen it. Recent or otherwise. Where did you see it?

You don't have to tell me how ridiculously bad it is. Some movies are just forgettably bad, but this is one nobody forgets. I've yet to talk to anyone who thought it was good, but I wouldn't mind hearing from anyone who feels that way.

I haven't cast a vote because I haven't seen it, but I sure would like to. Does anyone know where I can buy it on DVD?

Breaking the bank

This is a comedy the talented Alec Guinnes did for the Ealing studio in the early part of his career. Of his Ealing days, he left us a legacy that is hard to surpass: "Kind Hearts and Coronets", "The Ladykillers" and this one, that comes to mind.

Directed by Charles Crichton and written by T.E. Clarke, this is a fun movie that in spite of the years since it was filmed, it still charms its audiences, young and old.

The background is a London, right after the war. The film is original in that it takes us all over the city to places that one can identify so clearly, even after more than 50 years! It speaks of how careful are the English not to destroy their monuments.

As the would be robbers, Henry "Dutch" Holland is a man with a plan. He recognizes in his neighbor of the Lavender Hill rooming house, Alfred Pendlebury, a kindred soul that will see his proposal of how to steal the precious gold bullion from the Bank of England. It's a big operation, yet, only four people are needed to carry on the job.

This is a comedy of errors, where the best laid plans go awry in the small details the gang hadn't planned. The sure thing becomes a dead giveaway to the authorities once Holland and Pendlebury decide to go after the souvenir one young student bought in Paris that is part of the loot. Prior to that, the scenes in Paris at the Eiffel Tower was an original sequence for a movie that relies on intelligence rather than in overblown special effects.

Alec Guinness is charming as the master mind behind the heist. Stanley Holloway, a great English actor is magnificent as the man with an artistic eye, who almost derails the operation. Sid James and Alfie Bass contribute to make the film the joy it is with their comic presence. In a small cameo that comes and goes so quickly, we watch a young and elegant Audrey Hepburn makes an graceful appearance.

This is a film for all Ealing fans of all ages.

Review :

Uninspired dusty outback tale, centered on moos, not roos.

Maureen O'Hara, in her prime, is wasted in this rather dreary , pointless, outback yarn, shot in Technicolor, on location in Australia. Fortunately, she would rebound with 2 of her best roles, in "The Quiet Man" and "Against All Flags", where she had more interesting leading men(John Wayne, Errol Flynn) than the badly miscast urbane Peter Lawford, barely recognizable behind all that facial hair.

In a minimal effort to justify the title, we do see a couple of roos hopping about in one scene. But, at times, we see many more thirsty, hungry , cattle, who only have wind-blown dust to eat much of the time. The plot is an unfocused mishmash, that never really grabs our attention and never comes to any dramatic conclusion, aside from a big rainstorm that finally ends the long drought, that has the townies doing 'a rain dance'. Shortly before this, Lawford and Boone engage in a bizarre fight with bullwhips and a rifle, after being spotted in the bush by a couple of lawmen. ......Maureen, after begging to be included, wanted out after discovering what it was really going to be like. Perhaps the only saving grace for contemporary audiences was the brief shots of some of the native animals and natives, at a time when such weren't commonly available.

The Jodhaa Akbar of the 1950s

Today we make huge hoopla if any Hollywood technician is associated with any Bollywood film. But more than half a century back Sohrab Modi made an epic costume drama employing some very prolific names from the West. His 1952 film Jhansi Ki Rani boasted of Hollywood technicians like Oscar winning cinematographer Ernest Haller (Gone with the Wind), Oscar winning writer Geza Herczeg (The Life of Emily Zola), Oscar nominated editor Russell Lloyd (The Man Who Would Be The King, Moby Dick) and some more on its credit list.

Sohrab Modi was known for his spectacular historical films like Pukar, Sikandar (Alexander – The Great) and Prithvi Vallabh. He continued his legacy of making epic historical biographies with Jhansi Ki Rani which was mounted on a lavish budget and had every element that would add to the magnificence of a costume drama from opulent sets, rich costumes, dramatic dialogues, theatrical performances, extravagant action with lifelike battlefield sequences involving hundreds of horses, elephants and soldiers. To give reference with a contemporary analogy, Jhansi Ki Rani was the Jodhaa Akbar of the 50s.

The film is based on the life history of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, who was one of the first Indians to rebel against the British Government. Rani Lakshmibai finds a prominent mention in history textbooks of India but Sohrab Modi's film takes an in-depth look on the entire biography of the queen from her childhood to her death. In Bollywood history, other than this film, Rani Lakshmibai had a faint one-scene reference in the Ketan Mehta directed Aamir Khan starrer Mangal Pandey towards the end in an epilogue where Varsha Usgaonkar posed as the Rani. (Incidentally Sohrab Modi's Jhansi Ki Rani had a one-scene reference to Mangal Pandey). The common link between Lakshmibai and Mangal Pandey is that both were associated with the First War of Indian Independence – the uprising against British that started in 1957.

Ketan Mehta had planned a biographical on Rani Lakshmibai as a follow-up film to Mangal Pandey and an extension on the 1957 Uprising. Unfortunately with the box-office failure of Mangal Pandey, his film never took off. Similarly actresses Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai had once contemplated playing Jhansi Ki Rani but none of the projects materialized. Thankfully that leaves Sohrab Modi's production as the only feature film on the life of Rani Lakshmibai and its authenticity remains un-tampered. A TV series on Rani Lakshmibai is currently on air but the literary manipulations to the biography to adapt to the long-drawn-out requirements of the small screen, completely spoils the essence of the legend.

Sohrab Modi took the effort to keep his film's screenplay (penned by half a dozen writers) historically accurate and comprehensive and yet entertaining. The film opens with the queen's childhood when she was known as Manu and had the courage to face an elephant. When the chief adviser of Jhansi, Rajguru (Sohrab Modi) sees her valour, he asks Manu's father Moropant to get her married to the much-elder King of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao (Mubarak). So the 9-year-old Manu is married off to the 50-year-old Gangadhar. Trained under Rajguru, Manu grows up to be Lakshmibai (Mehtab), the Rani of Jhansi who is proficient at all physical and political challenges. (Ironically, in real life Mehtab was married to Sohrab Modi who was elder to her by 20 years).

Lakshmibai has a son from Gangadhar Rao who soon succumbs to illness after which the couple adopts a boy Damodar Rao to be the heir of Jhansi. But the British East India Company rejects the adopted Damodar Rao as the claimant to the throne of Jhansi and wants to seize the kingdom. That results into conflict between the Queen and British resulting into rebellion that led to the First War of Indian Independence in 1957.

Sohrab Modi came from the stage background which reflected pretty much in his film. The drama induced through the heavy-worded dialogues was intense and the performances were very theatrical. There was no compromise to get the period look of the film perfect (real foreign actors played the British characters) and the magnificence showed in every frame. As the film nearly perfected in getting the 'costume' era feel and dense 'drama' effect, Jhansi Ki Rani aptly justified its genre of 'costume drama'.

The film had a US release in 1956 and was titled 'The Tiger and the Flame' based on one elaborate dance piece that Gangadhar Rao organizes to welcome the grownup Lakshmibai to the court and take charge of the kingdom. This was India's first Technicolour film, though unfortunately the DVD I got had a Black and White print of the film and I kept wondering throughout on how the film would look in each frame had it been in colour. However despite all its visual brilliance and historical relevance, the film didn't perform as expected at the box-office and was reportedly a big loss to Sohrab Modi who was the producer as well.

Nevertheless Jhansi Ki Rani is a wonderful watch if you like well-made historical costume dramas.

Plot here has Confederate veteran Jeff Waring arriving in Independence, Missouri shortly after the Civil War, and intending never again to use a gun. He finds that rancher Artemus Taylor, an arthritic despot, and his henchies, Sam Tobin and Cree, are forcing out the settlers in order to claim their land for the incoming railroad. The plot nearly predates "The Great Train Robbery" in age but the gritty execution and well-acted performances take it out of the norm... way out, in a couple of instances. Brassy Myrna Dell is on hand as Taylor's independent daughter, only slightly less meaner than her father, and the always welcome Dorothy Malone is the pretty school marm on the side of good. Needless to say, Ireland's passive outlook on life changes before the end.

Review :

An interesting low-budget western.

Using a theme that became quite popular decades later, Amateau scores well on his directorial debut. The original title of this movie was to be "The Rebel" however, producer Broder was unable to keep his hands off anything he was involved in, hence the uninspired title. It is interesting to note that Director Amateau years later in his TV show "Dukes of Hazzard" named the automobile "The Rebel." Ireland is perfectly cast as the emoting Civil War veteran, only seeking peace, but willing to fight and kill to get it. The supporting cast is extremely interesting, featuring the, by then has-been Morris, Tierney, Dell, and Chaney. Considering that Ireland, Chaney, Tierney, and Morris were renown for their drinking bouts, working on this picture must have been a real challenge. The end result is a very good, if dated western, featuring some of the finest acting put on celluloid.
