Hollywood Back Then

While MGM was producing immortal big-budget musicals in Culver City, the producer Johnny Taps was churning out low-budget very forgettable "B" features like this 1952 one for Harry Cohn at the Columbia Pictures studio on Gower Street. Very pretty Charlotte Austin, the daughter of crooner Gene, is the star and never quite pulls it off the role. (Her career as a leading lady was short-lived.) Richard Quine, who had been a kid singer in Judy Garland pictures, is the contract director who keeps the silly story moving. (Quine went on to direct many of Kim Novak's early films for the same studio.) Perhaps the only plus is that the picture shows actual Columbia Pictures projection rooms and sound stages, and gives the viewer of feeling of what this famous Hollywood studio looked and felt like back then. Other than that, not much else to recommend other than the chance to see and hear 1950's nightclub performers Frankie Laine and Billy Daniels entertain.

Realistic war and gentle love: a nice surprise

Once upon a time Hollywood could really pump out these classic war films; here, in the midst of the Korean War, RKO Studios tells how the North Koreans and their allies invaded the South, pushing them and their American allies to the very southern end of the peninsula; the story is told by focusing on a Colonel played by Robert Mitchum, whose job it is to delay as much as the possible the push south by the Commies, giving time to the UN and the free West to get its act together and come to Korea's aid.

"One Minute To Zero" benefits greatly from some excellent war effects: fighter jets setting mountainsides on fire, mortar shells blowing up tanks, and the like. Particularly unusual and gruesome is a quick shot about 30 minutes into the film of a charred corpse lieing on a hull of a burned-out tank.

Robert Mitchum cruises through this movie quite handily; he basically plays himself. He is a very likable actor, and I admire him greatly, but he plays this role with what appears to be very little effort - and I mean that as a compliment - I think he was just born to play characters like this. A great actor with commanding screen presence.

Mitchum's blossoming romance with Ann Blythe is managed quite interestingly: both characters are "a little older", so there is no heavy panting; rather, their early love scenes are surprisingly gentle, slightly but pleasantly awkward, and quite tender; Mitchum's first kiss for Ann is on her cheek. A nice change of pace indeed (though I think she is kind of tiny for him).

The director made sure to include a handful of clichéd Yankee soldiers: the innocent and comic chef turned warrior, the two buddies, one of whom kind of bullies the other, only to have the other save the life of the first, like a faithful dog, and so on. But they are not too overdone.

And I never tire of seeing American soldiers of different rank be able to joke with each other, recognizing each other's innate goodness and patriotism, while still respecting rank. And cheesy as it is, Mitchum's compliments and mentoring of the embattled captain played by Richard Egan are just plain heart-warming and pleasing.

A very interesting little film of the "forgotten war", Korea. Don't expect too much, just sit back and enjoy the kind of film they don't make anymore.

just get the gun, please.

In glorious trucolour! this very well made bumpkin comedy actioned with Hillbilly strumpet Judy Canova is about.....absolutely nothing. From a very promising start to some great indoor sets and scenes and some rustic zooming around in her old car...nothing happens. Apparently Judy decides to 'clean up corruption'...I don't even remember that. I remember the train set and all the clutter in her general store/toyshop/outfitters...and I only saw it recently. What is this film about? There is all this running about and driving and crossing streams and Judy gawping and a fussin and bailing up someone, and a few gunshots and more running about and fussin and gawping and another trip to the store and on and on it goes. It is really well made and looks great. But nothing happens.

Produced in Italy in breathtaking Technicolor, this biographical story of Puccini (played by L'avventura's Gabriele Ferzetti) spans his creative life from early student days to the height of success, including his early flop Madama Butterfly and his incomplete Turandot. Along the way he encounters three women who change his life, including a sexy, beautiful singer (Two for the Road's Nadia Gray) whom he drops for a small town girl (Sirocco's Marta Toren), and a servant girl who commits suicide over him. Well-selected excerpts from Manon, La Boheme, Madama Butterfly and Turandot are featured along with other Puccini music, including the voice of Beniamino Gigli. Sets, costumes and production values are first class, all sumptuously filmed by Claude Renoir.

Beware of Image's DVD of "Puccini"

It's nearly impossible to judge the true merits of "Puccini", which appears to be an attractive, old-fashioned, Hollywood-style bio pic, due to the disastrous DVD mastering done by its U.S. distributor Image Entertainment. This usually reliable company has really dropped the ball this time by releasing a disc that has to be seen (and heard) to be believed. Only the Three Stooges or the Marx Brothers, in their prime, could have put together a mess of a disc like this, with scenes wildly out of order, characters appearing, disappearing, then meeting again, as if for the first time, scenes stopping in mid-sentence practically, only to resume some 10, 20, or 40 minutes later, characters aging, then growing young again, well, you get the idea. As for the film's memorable music, well, as lovely as it may be, the presentation of the famous operas now makes absolutely no sense at all. In the end, if you care anything about Puccini, the man and his music, you'll most likely be pulling the hair out of your head by the time the last curtain finally falls.

Now, whether the multitude of errors on this disc were human or technical or a combination of both, Image Entertainment needs to do something about them, and right away! This disc has been on the market for a couple of years already, and I'm rather surprised it hasn't been recalled before now. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be, because any company that would let this mess out the door likely doesn't care much about the product itself in the first place. After all, time is money, and Heaven forbid someone might actually have to waste it by watching the DVD before it's sent off to market. Too bad they didn't though because it's likely a pretty good flick, at that. Sweet-natured, old-fashioned, filled with some of the most beautiful music ever written. Maybe someday, somebody somewhere will care enough to sort this thing out, and the real "Puccini" will be available once again, but until then, all I can do is offer that old adage, "Buyer Beware!"

On Ryan's Express

Looking at the IMDb "Awards" link will reveal this outstanding Anthony Mann western was nominated for a single "Academy Award", for the "Story and Screenplay" by Sam Rolfe and Harold Jack Bloom. The story (and much about the film) is excellent. Certainly, the writers deserved recognition for the intriguing story, and complex characters. But, to see "The Naked Spur" was not nominated for "Best Color Cinematography" is shocking. William Mellor's photography is truly superior. Perhaps, they felt one nomination was enough for a movie about greed...

James Stewart (as Howard Kemp), Janet Leigh (as Lina Patch), Robert Ryan (as Ben Vandergroat), Ralph Meeker (as Roy Anderson), and Millard Mitchell (as Jesse Tate) are an outstanding Colorado quintet. With Mann and Mellor directing, the small cast appears sprawling. Of the five, Mr. Ryan's intensely malevolent "Ben" reigns supreme; it's difficult to envision "The Naked Spur" without Ryan's psychological thorn throwing. Recipient Stewart is also at his best. The other three are great; though, more should have been to done develop and/or explain the relationship. Leigh had/has with Ryan and Stewart; she is underused. That, and a couple of continuity and/or editing problems may distract, slightly. We shouldn't be to be too greedy about great movies, after all.

Based on the comic book character "Thun'Da, King of the Congo," a Tarzan imitator, whose only comic of any value is the first one rendered entirely by cult artist Frank Frazetta, this was Columbia's 48th serial and the seventh and last serial starring Buster Crabbe. Crabbe plays U.S.A.F. Captain Roger Drum who shoots down an unidentified plane whose pilot was bound for Africa to deliver a message to a subversive group. Drum takes his place, makes the flight and crashes in the jungle. The rock people, led by Princess Pha, rescue him and take him to their temple. The subversives, led by Boris, appear and Drum rings a temple gong in alarm, and its sound crumbles the walls, burying him in debris at the end of Chapter One, "Mission of Menace." Chapter Two, "Red Shadows in the Jungle" finds Drum being proclaimed Thunda, King of the Congo, by the natives but is still mistrusted by Princess Phi and her assistant Nahee, still miffed that he rang the wrong gong. This goes on for 15 chapters ...

The 'King' of the serials, in one of the best.

'King of the Congo' is my favorite Columbia serial, I remember it was screened many times over the years in the 1950's, at the Saturday Afternoon Matinees, in my local picture theater here in Bentleigh, Australia, was always received with great applause by the kids,me included. Buster Crabbe, the ultimate serial hero, looked spectacular in the loin cloth, although he was in his forties by then. Like all serials, it was magnificent nonsense, and we loved it. Columbia serials were my favorites, I loved their style, Knox Manning's voice overs at the beginning and end of each chapter were always more exciting than the 'slides' put up to read in other serials. I live in hopes that this serial will someday be released on DVD by Columbia. It has all the elements of a great serial, action in the jungle , the usual confusing plot, villains who can't get anything right, a hero who keeps walking into the same trap, and at least one unexpected surprise when veteran serial 'bad guy' Jack Ingram, turns out to be a good guy after all. Come on Columbia, I know you have just released 'Batman and Robin' another fun serial, on DVD, but this one beats it hands down. In fact, if you can put this one, and Mysterious Island' out on DVD,I can die happy. 'King of the Congo' contains all the elements that go to make up a great serial, all in one terrific package. Until the next smashing Chapter............

Unbelievably Bad

What a stinkeroo this turned out to be!!! At one time, much earlier in her career, Linda Darnell was one of my favorites - no great shakes as an Actress, but very beautiful and pleasant (particularly in films like "The Mark of Zorro" and "Blood and Sand") but when I saw this monstrosity, the memories of her golden days faded quickly. The story is unbelievable and farcical, the acting second-rate, the supporting cast insufferable. I cannot think of a more immature performance by anyone when compared to Tab Hunter, and Donald Gray had to be the most boring leading man they could have picked. Added to this, was the terrible photography (and I am not just referring to the color!) Everyone associated with this, must have shuddered whenever it was shown.
