After stealing a loaf a bread to feed a starving family, Jean Valjean is sentenced to ten years at hard labor as a galley slave. There he is taught to read and write by another prisoner and meets Javert, an obsessive policeman who was himself born to convict parents aboard a prison ship. After his release, Valjean is treated as a pariah but finally finds shelter in the home of a kindly bishop. Valjean repays the clergyman's generosity by stealing his silver plate. He is apprehended by the authorities and returned to the bishop but is amazed when the kindly old priest tells them that the valuable plates were a gift. This becomes a transforming experience for the ex-convict, who establishes himself under an assumed name in a small country village as factory manager and ultimately mayor. Unfortunately the newly-promoted Javert is assigned there as chief inspector. Although he doesn't recognize his old nemesis at first, the two clash over Javert's overzealous prosecution of the letter of ...

No Love For Javert

Michael Rennie and Robert Newton have a go at playing the classic roles of Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in another version of Les Miserables. The story was far better told on Broadway and in the 1935 film with Fredric March and Charles Laughton.

Not the fault of the actors, Michael Rennie is the restrained voice of civilized humanity in Jean Valjean, proof that a man can overcome a bad start in life and make a contribution to mankind's betterment. Holding the opposite view of course is Robert Newton as the ruthless Inspector Javert who in fact did have a bad upbringing, the child of a convict, but refuses to believe that anyone else can. His negative view of mankind doesn't bring anyone any love in their lives. This I've always felt is the key to Javert be he played by Charles Laughton or Robert Newton.

What I didn't like and was not in the March/Laughton version was the idea that the Valjean character had more than a fatherly interest in Cosette, the child of the doomed Fantine who Valjean adopts. Those are the major female roles in Les Miserables and are played here by Debra Paget and Sylvia Sidney respectively and well. I don't think it was necessary at all to have Paget's young suitor, revolutionary student Cameron Mitchell make that accusation.

It's not a bad film, but after March and Laughton this one seems like a local stock company production.

Close to the end of the trail for the Durango Kid

Charles Starrett is back as Steve Holden/The Durango Kid and he's ready to clean up the reservation from golddiggers Fred Sears and his henchmen Rory Mallison and Zon Murray.

As a fan of the B-Western I have to admit the later Durango Kids are among my least favorites. The early Durango Kid's were entertaining though often a little stilted."The Durango Kid" and "Return of the Durango Kid" are entertaining B-westerns. And for the singing cowboy fans check out Bob Wills in two good Durangos, Lawless Empire and Blazing the Western Trail.

Which brings us to this film. This was one the last of the Durango Kid series. While Charles Starrett conveyed an amiable, likable screen persona, to me he always seemed more like the Family Insurance Agent than an Western Movie Star. Also by this time Starrett was a little long in the tooth for the role of the Durango Kid. At almost 50 he seemed more suited for the role of the Durango Kid's father. Fred Sears, who directed most of the later Durangos plays the lead heavy. and Jock Mahoney gives us his best impression of an Indian Brave as Swift Eagle. Smiley Burnette is also along for the ride and contributes the comic relief with his zany antics.

By this time harsh economic reality was setting in on the movie studios. With a run time of 54 minutes, it feels like this one was produced, directed and edited with the heart of an accountant. The studio penny-pinching really shows through. Just not a lot to recommend here. This one is for die hard Durango Kid Fans only.

Review :

With a bit of editing, this could be a much better film--and it's certainly NOT for all tastes

This film is highly reminiscent of Judy Holliday's other film, PHFFFT! because both films concern a divorcing couple that down deep still love each other dearly. Also, in many ways it is reminiscent of THE WAR OF THE ROSES in that it appears to be a cautionary tale about marital discord, but unlike this Danny DeVito movie, THE MARRYING KIND is more upbeat and doesn't have the same dark sensibilities as WAR OF THE ROSES.

The film begins with a husband and wife in divorce court. Instead of just granting the divorce, the judge brings them both into her chambers to discuss why they want the divorce since it isn't readily apparent. Both Holliday and Aldo Ray (who plays the husband) then begin to recount their marriage through a series of flashbacks. The flashbacks are incredibly well-acted and realistic--like a real honest to goodness family. While most of their ups and downs seem pretty normal, great tragedy strikes later in their marriage (get out the tissues!).

All of this is wonderfully done, but also VERY tough to watch as things turn from bad to much worse. Plus, after a while, the tragedy and pain becomes a little too much and seems to drag on a bit too long. Shortening up the film by about fifteen minutes would have greatly helped the pacing. Despite these problems with the film, though, the film is marvelously realistic and great film-making. In many ways, this is a must-see film for young couples or anyone contemplating divorce, as it gives an unusual perspective and insights you just don't normally see addressed in films.

Man Bait - only a modest catch for the viewer

In 1950, before Hammer made a name for itself with a memorable horror output, it set up a deal with American producer Robert L. Lippert to make a dozen or so low budget crime dramas, all of which were to be shot in the UK. In all the arrangement lasted for some five years, and utilised the fading star qualities of such past-their-sell-date American talent such as Dane Clark, Paul Henreid, Lizabeth Scott and George Brent, as well as leading British character actors.

None of the films are of the front rank, being issued originally on the bottom half of double bills. Hammer may not have established itself as a memorable producer of noir on the basis of this transatlantic deal, but the results have been unfairly neglected (being the basis of only a passing reference in the official history of the studio for instance).

Criticism of the films, apart from focusing on their small budgets and hand-me-down leads, has generally dwelt on the success or otherwise of transplanting an American hardboiled genre into a different soil. Certainly the first of those made under the new arrangement The Last Page (aka: Man Bait, 1952) is example. Far too genteel to be successful as more than a mildly suspenseful thriller, its impact is further affected by the unassuming performance of lead George Brent - an actor whom Betty Davies apparently liked as a partner on screen as it was so easy to steal the picture from him! Brent plays the manager of a bookshop, hardly the first choice for a thriller/ noir setting (although one makes a memorable appearance in The Big Sleep) who is blackmailed by the bad blonde of the title - no less than Diana Dors, an early screen role. It was an early credit too for one of Hammer's best directors Terence Fisher, though again this critic, at least, thinks he remains a minor talent. Like practically all the Hammer films in this series, the title was changed for the American market and 'Man Bait' certainly sounds more the job for the pulp world that the films inhabit. It also places Dors firmly at the centre of this film with a fine sense of atmosphere - having worked in the book trade for some years I found the dated interiors and procedures especially fascinating

  • while some other, equally effective location shooting amidst a

now-lost London adds to the charm.

Nothing very 'Champion' here

Marge and Gower Champion were a popular dance team in the 1950s, probably best-known for 'Show Boat', in which their roles were very much secondary. They did some of their best work in television, notably in a musical special with Yves Montand. Although they were excellent dancers, and Gower was a very talented director/choreographer with some ability as a comedian, neither one of them had much acting ability ... which seriously compromised them when MGM attempted to move them up from supporting roles in other people's musicals.

'Everything I Have Is Yours' was MGM's attempt at a starring vehicle for the Champions. Frankly, they aren't good enough actors to carry the weight of a feature film, even a musical. The Champions play Pamela and Chuck Hubbard, a husband-and-wife dance team. (What a stretch!) The Hubbards have attained stardom together, but there are backstage problems in the marriage, and they agree to a trial separation. Pamela becomes involved with another man (Dennis O'Keefe in a bland performance), and for a while it looks like the Hubbards will go their separate ways permanently. But this is an MGM musical, so of course there's a happy ending...

'Everything I Have Is Yours' is froth ... which wouldn't be bad at all, if it were enjoyable froth. This movie is turgid. Imagine a musical version of a soap opera, and that's what you've got here. Worse luck, the musical numbers aren't incorporated into the plot of the movie ... instead, the plot screeches to a halt (and I do mean 'screeches') whenever it's time for another dance number. When the music stops, the plot lurches forward again. This is a bad movie. I'll rate it 2 points out of 10. As a trivia note, I'll mention that Marge Champion (real name Marjorie Belcher; I wonder why she changed it) was the half-sister of silent-film star Lina Basquette, who was so good in Cecil B. DeMille's 'The Godless Girl'. I recommend you see that movie instead of this one.

They had one obstacle on their way: The Silver Kid

This western is full of excellent action scenes from beginning to end. The color and cinematography are outstanding. Murphy is "The Silver Kid" , a man always ready to draw his guns. Stephen McNally is the sheriff, who cannot be fast on the draw because his hand is hurt, so Audie is helping him. The brawl at the poker table between Murphy and Lee Marvin is one of the best moments. Faith Domergue as the bad girl talks exactly like Marilyn Monroe. Susan Cabot is the good girl, Gerald Mohr is the real bad guy, and Eugene Iglesias is Johnny Sombrero, a bad guy who is not so bad. Don Siegel did quite a good job here, making a very enjoyable film, which together with "The Cimarron Kid" and "Ride Clear of Diablo" are Murphy's best westerns.

Coat of many bummers

SPOILER below!

This Gogol-drawn seriocomedy about a poor scrivener who can't get no respect—and eventually dies from pneumonia when the warm coat he'd so desperately needed is stolen from him (sorry for the spoiler but it's obvious very early on that the story is headed thataway)--is well-crafted but somewhat dated. Not so much in technique, but in the heavy-handedness with which all the protagonist's harassers (especially his pompous bosses) are caricatured, and the tears-of-a- clown schtick star Renato Rascel is allowed to indulge. He's decent enough, but there are times when you realize the film is just stopping to let him do the comic business local audiences would have then expected from a popular comedian, even in a change-of-pace more serious vehicle. Coming just after "Variety Lights," a success for himself and debuting co-director Fellini, "The Overcoat" shows some of director Alberto Lattuada's trademark strengths in depicting social milieus. He did a better job a decade alter with "Mafioso," which also got a much superior performance from another comedian in a more dramatic role—Alberto Sordi.
