Fort Vengeance. Western Headquarters of the North West Mounted Police.

Fort Vengeance is directed by Lesley Selander and written by Dan Ullman. It stars James Craig, Rita Moreno, Keith Larsen, Reginald Denny, Charles Irwin and Morris Ankrum. Music is by Paul Dunlap and cinematography by Harry Neumann.

As written there's a whole bunch of interest in this otherwise routinely staged Oater. On the surface it's a good brother versus bad brother theme, as Dick (Craig) and Carey Ross (Larsen) flee problems in the States by crossing the border into Canada and join the famed North West Mounted Police. Carey Ross is the tempestuous young brother, Dick Ross the wise and reasonable one. There's trouble afoot with the Indians, Sitting Bull (Michael Granger) is on the warpath and wants to unite with the Canadian Blackfoots to wipe out ole whitey.

Running at just 75 minutes, Selander crams as much action in as he can, unfortunately this is at a cost to narrative promise. The story is set just after Custer's folly, and thus the Canadian Red Coats are dealing with the aftermath of the Blue Coats' ventures down across the border. On the Native American front, Sitting Bull is using devious tactics to stir up his wrath, but Blackfoot leader Crowfoot (Ankrum) still believes peace is possible. But with Carey Ross now a loose cannon on the Red Coat side of the fence, this part of Canada is turning into a powder-keg.

There's a lot of fascinating historical ideas ticking away here, but the nature of this sort of production means nothing is ever expanded upon. The action scenes are competent, though the fisticuffs choreography is poor, and I'm still not exactly sure what Rita Moreno's character has to do with things? She seems to exist just to tease the men, unflatteringly so! The Cinecolor looks washed out, meaning the potential airy vistas lack vibrancy, while you will search far and wide for an acting performance of note.

The various narrative strands jostling with each other for notice in the picture keeps things watchable, while the finale does pack an emotional punch, but ultimately it winds up as a time filling second string feature that is quickly forgotten once the credits do roll. A shame that. 6/10

Review :

Grade B bio of sports star, aimed at football fans only

Republic made this bio of athlete Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch on a shoestring and even has Hirsch playing himself. Nothing much happens in this life except for a skull fracture which effects the All-Star's coordination (the slow and successful healing of which removes any real drama). There is an overly lush and romantic score that it totally out of place here - sounds like it was lifted from another film and dropped here accidentally. The effective intercutting of lots and lots of newsreel footage depicting Hirsch in his high achievement moments with the film proper earned editor Cotton Warburton an Oscar nom, but this achievement does not seem of merit to today's viewers. The Ram's Fighting Song, heard over the credits, is excruciatingly awful. Hirsch does show a great ease with the camera and his aw shucks acting style is endearing. He seems to have been a sweet and kind individual, dedicated to a life of athletics. His craggy face and build would put him in the hunk category even by today's standards.

This is a crashing bore of a film for general audiences, but I imagine sports fans, and especially football fans, will find much here to enjoy. It is recommended solely to the latter audience.

Far From Great But Gripping Anyway

This is far from the best Don Siegel movie. But, despite flaws in writing and acting, it's gripping and moves along, keeping the viewer on the edge of his or her seat.

Nothing is really credible. Theresa Wright as an itinerant farmer's wife? Actors with pronounced New York accents as menacing rednecks? And something about the script seems truly sub-par. The dialogue is not grammatical and this is not a matter of simulating regional speech or signifying class. The dialogue is just not well written.

The music, too, is strangely self-contradictory. At first it is pure schmalz, and Don Siegel is not the man for romance, even if it's romantic noir. Then a theramon is introduced and it sounds better.

Despite quibbling on my part, it's an engrossing movie. Believable? Not exactly. But, if one cuts it some considerable slack, it works well as a suspenseful kind-of noir.

Positively Cleopatra like

Sam Katzman formerly of Monogram Studios probably could not believe the budget he had with Columbia Pictures for Conquest Of Cochise. Color and location shooting. I can hear him saying I know I'm not at Monogram any more.

This story about Cochise takes place as the USA has formally taken over the Gadsden Purchase in 1853, the last bit of continental USA that we acquired. The Mexicans sold it to us for a tidy sum, it was mostly desert and its largest city was a desert settlement that was called Tucson. But it did sit across a possible southern continental railway route and we bought it for that purpose.

Now to enforce some law there because Cochise and his Chiracahua Apaches rule most of that bit of turf with Comanches occasionally raiding in there as well. That's what Major Robert Stack of the US Cavalry is sent there to do, make a treaty. Of course there are forces who don't want a treaty made.

Nevertheless Stack goes to negotiate with Cochise who is played most impressively by John Hodiak.

Broken Arrow which is set post Civil War has a lot of similarities and an actor who got great acclaim for playing Cochise. Jeff Chandler got an Oscar nomination for his performance. Broken Arrow got a far bigger budget than Conquest Of Cochise. Still what Hodiak did should have gotten more acclaim.

Conquest Of Cochise was not a bad film and for a Sam Katzman production its positively Cleopatra like.

A true comic delight....

It is difficult to choose among the many comic films put out by the Ealing Studios in the 50's & 60's, but The Captain's Paradise ranks right up there. Alec Guinness is at the top of his comic form as the smug Captain Saint James, whose deviously constructed 'paradise' comes crashing down around him. The story, like all the best comedies, is really a morality tale, with the captain getting his comeuppance, but, in the end, still foxily escaping final judgement. A sparklingly witty script and fine ensemble acting make this one a must-see for devotees of British comedy. I never tire of watching this one.

Quaint Move

First of all I must say I love this film. I remember watching it about 30 years ago, and I recall enjoying it a lot.

Some people will say the Ringer is predictable I would beg to differ slightly, I would say that its predictability adds to its unpredictably if that makes sense!

It's a fairly short film which suits me with my diminishing concentration levels, great acting, Herbert Lom playing a typical bad guy, a young Denholm Elliott and William Hartnell playing a cheeky cockney villain.

I for one think its great entertainment, bought a copy from Amazon and have watched it twice in 3 days. Marvellous ending by the way. Enjoy it

A good drama of love

In the Toledo dominated by the Napoleonic army code, the head of a guerrilla group "Fernando de la Cierva" (Gérard Landry), falls prisoner. His lady love "Inés" (Alida Valli), get their freedom in exchange for their wedding with the governor "Don Blas" (Pedro Armendariz). However, this suspicion that women with which it is going to marry continues to be with the guerrilla.

It is a good movie with a script based on the novel "El cofre y el aparecido" in which it sees the good work of its director Henri Decoin, and also Fernando Palacios, "La Gran Familia", "Tres de la Cruz Roja", "El día de los enamorados"… and assistant of direction in countless films.

The scenarios are authentic because they are boulders in places as well known as Alcázar of Toledo, Puente of Alcántara, Castillo de San Servando and various corners of historical old Toledo. It is a marvel views the scenes magnificently atmospheric in the early years of the nineteenth century.

The performance of the actors is very good, stressing the great beauty of the actresses Alida Valli, Francoise Arnoul and Marisa de Leza. It has bit actors with a splendid job as Jose Sepulveda, Jose Isbert, Manuel Requena, Felix Briones and Nati Mistral singing a beautiful ballad, while playing a gypsy.

Good photography of Michel Kelber, perfect music by J. Grunenwald. To highlight in the film is the first scenes at the cemetery, and scenes of action

Memories

Saw this with a childhood friend of mine in the 50's on TV when we were 'sneaking' staying up very late. When it was done, we looked at each other, both having been touched deeply, though we couldn't have described how. Ever after, it has been one of our 'special' memories -- one of us says "remember that movie?" and the other understands perfectly! That's what movies should do! Did anyone else have that experience on first watching it? I remember being very affected by Hitchcock's Saboteur, also, after watching it late one night as a kid. It stirred the same response that later made me a 'movie fan' -- that magical sense of someone (the director) saying something to you in a way that seemed to make life 'bigger' than it had been before.

The original is great, so is the remake

The original version of Manon des Sources directed by Marcel Pagnol tells the story of Manon, a girl living in the mountains, who decides to block the spring supplying the water to the village. Manon wants to have revenge on the inhabitants of the village that ignored her father when he was killing himself to find precious water for his own land.

This story sounds familiar to some people as being the second part of Claude Berri's 1986 remake. Not only the story is different, but the style of the original movie is too. Pagnol uses a very less dramatic way to tell that poignant story although some scenes are, like Manon confronting Ugolin and the villagers after the sermon. As in other Pagnol movies, the funny dialogs make the movie. The story of the hunchback told by Monsieur Belloiseau and the trial of Manon are elements that are absent in the remake and that are delightful here. These and the priest sermon are exceptionally entertaining. That contrast in style is certainly a reason why the remake did an excellent job compared to most.

The acting here is of superior level and especially Rellys as Ugolin. The cast of the remake had to be top-notch and again it was. The cinematography is beautiful with light effects that recreate the warmth of Provence. Again, the remake had it too by adding color.

The remake had the ingenuity of depicting the story of Jean de Florette in images and involving Le Papet much more in the story. I don't know which story is the most faithful to Pagnol's novel though.

The Pagnol movie may not be as entertaining to non-French speakers because the dialogs have a higher importance than in Berri's. I doubt that subtitles could render the feeling and I'm convinced that dubbing wouldn't. Nevertheless, it's surely a feast for the ears of a French speaker.

Still, Pagnol's Manon des Sources is amazing and Berri's remake had the intelligence to be different. It also had the approach to catch an international audience. If you liked the remake, give the original a try.

"Men -- I'd like to fry 'em all in deep fat!"

Yes, as one commenter noted, Susan Hayward seems a bit Eastern-glamorous to be kicking up dust on the rodeo circuit. But she glowers and snarls with the best of them, and, top-billed in this man's-man movie, she's great fun. But even she's dominated by a supremely confident and virile Robert Mitchum, as a has-been rodeo champ trying to turn her husband (a rather miscast, but hard-working, Arthur Kennedy) into a king of the saddle. It's location-filmed and has no traces of studio hackery, and Nicholas Ray keeps it wonderfully outdoorsy, with some fabulous stunt-riding footage and an authentic atmosphere of the hardscrabble rodeo life. The initial Hayward-Mitchum shower scene has to be one of the sexiest in all 1950s cinema, and there's a great sexual undercurrent to all their encounters. Kennedy seems a little pallid by comparison, and is playing a character that's hard to root for, but he does try hard. I didn't know this movie and am grateful to TCM for running it -- it's a real discovery. However, their print has awfully uneven sound, and you'll have to keep adjusting your volume up, down, up, down.

Exceptional Noir--a must-see for fans of the genre

This is an exceptional Film Noir movie that almost merits a score of 9--it's THAT good. Like good Noir, it features some of the ugliest and scariest actors and I applaud the producers for finding such a motley group! Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef and Neville Brand are definitely the ugliest and toughest looking heavies of the age and here they all work together on a heist. The movie also stars John Payne and Preston Foster. While these two guys weren't as hideous as the other three, they were both well past their handsome prime--hence they were great Noir characters! In addition, the film is bloody and violent--definite pluses for Noir. While this may sound like Noir films are super-violent, they were compared to the average picture of the day but pale in comparison to more recent films. I like them because they are so gritty and realistic in their blunt portrayal of crime. In this case, watching John Payne slap the snot out of Van Cleef is an amazing scene. As for the plot, it's amazingly complex and interesting. So good, in fact, that I don't want to talk about the heist--lest if ruin the suspense. Suffice to say, it's well worth seeing with great writing, acting and all the elements you are looking for in Noir. A must-see for lovers of the genre.

Invasion of the Booty Snatchers

It's worth noting that this ultra-low-budget splicing-together of unmatched stock footage was mocked and panned even in its own day, so it should not be viewed seriously as an accurate document of Cold War paranoia. Even in the depths of the Red Scare, most Americans weren't stupid enough to be scared by crap like this. It was more like a super-cheapie public service announcement for the military-industrial complex. If you fast forward through most of the stock WW2 battle scenes, which are endless, and slow down for the "story" scenes, it's a mildly amusing exercise in what-if? science fiction -- doofy and utterly implausible, but good for some wry smiles. I mean, you gotta love that the hypnotist fortune teller is named Ohman. It's also kind of interesting that many, many more "serious," bigger-budget invasion and terrorist- plot films since this one have followed a pretty similar storyline, if more competently. Add the general atmosphere of paranoia post-9/11, and this thing is worth a look, with the FF button to the metal.

A childhood favorite

I haven't seen this movie since I was a child but even then I preferred it over the Shirley Temple film.

The version I saw was dubbed into English. Normally that irritated me (and still does, the rare times I see a dubbed movie--nowadays they're more often subtitled) but it actually made it easier to get into the movie because I didn't have to read any subtitles (and I don't know German). I read well above my grade level but it still would have been distracting. Now I probably wouldn't mind.

This movie is much more faithful to the book than the 1937 version.

Probably because it was filmed in Switzerland, where the story takes place, it has beautiful scenery. They didn't have use any back projections and sound stages for the outdoor sequences, something I noticed even as a child.

I looked forward to each time it came on TV in the Los Angeles area, where I grew up. I don't why they stopped showing it unless it was because the Shirley Temple version, which began to be shown a lot at that time, simply displaced it. If so, it's a shame. I'd love to see it again (and again and again, just like back then).

I was always fascinated with the story because my great-grandmother was from Switzerland and was a child at the time the book was originally published.
