A tribute to the modest world of theater.

At his first own picture, Bardem compiled some anecdotes of his parents life and took the exceptional Mankiewicz's "ALL ABOUT EVE" as an inspiration reference to certified and effusive document of affability and admiration to those mobile theater companies, that used to cross the wither Spain of forties and fifties with his modest performance. Emphasizing the longing of triumph that afflicts a young and slack actress, the film narrates with enviable intensity and a pompous visual formalism (with a foregrounds profusion), the miserable and competitive daily task that implies this kind of work; in an interesting social description that allows to think over some delicates themes, such as the dignity, the hope or the vocational doubt. In 1970, Bardem realized a musical version of the same story, "VARIETÉS", to display the downcast beauty of Sara Montiel.

Review :

Before the flood.

That was the beginning of the era when André Cayatte was championing all the good causes.Coming after "justice est faite"(about euthanasia) and "nous sommes tous des assassins" (about the death penalty,a subject which was unusual at the time),"avant le déluge" showed the youth's anguish after WW2,when they talked about a third world war in the fifties. Unable to relate to their parents, and frightened by the bleak future that was left for them ,a girl and four boys want to do what Noah did:escape to an Island in the sun on a boat. But their disposable funds are low and they get involved with robbery and murder, which leads them to their standing trial.

In fact,Cayatte put the parents in trial, and if his plea was unsubtle and devoid of nuance,it was a heartfelt account of an utterly distraught generation.

ANOTHER LOOK AT "AVANT LE DELUGE"(2006)

Given the rating on the IMDb board, and the very poor reviews it gets in French books,it' s obvious that this movie needs reassessment.

"It is a dated movie, sneer French critics, forgetting that it's its greatest quality:it is a film which was made in the early fifties and it does belong to that era.one cannot think of such a screenplay in our (troubled however) times.and nevertheless ,the movie had problems with the censorship which found it hard to believe such youngsters could turn into criminals.the movie repeats it twice "he is only 17" "he's just turned seventeen" "she's not seventeen".The movie got a PG 16 although ,except for one sequence ,it is not violent, even compared to its time's standards.

these are not natural born killers.they became murderers by chance.with a little luck, things would have worked out fine.and there are the parents....

....blame it on mama ,on papa! Cayatte holds the parents responsible for everything.Once again,it was trendy to laugh at Cayatte in those fusty Cahiers du Cinema .The parents are caricatures ,stereotypes, but the director wanted them to be so.....WW2 collaborator whose hate for Jews verges on paranoia ....liberal father whose naiveté predates May 68 and the post-81 disappointment (left/right/left/right,it is all the same)....wealthy parents whose concern is to make sure their fortune will be safe when the flood comes....over possessive mother whose son has difficulties finding his sexual identity.....and no parents at all ,as far the young Jew is concerned....

These parents are afraid...they fear that the Corean war might turn WW3.They never stop talking about this impending war. That's why their sons and daughter are beyond their command: fifteen years later, they would have gone to India ,or become hippies. In 1953,it is still the old dream of sailing away to the islands in the sun (see " Quai des Brumes " or" les Portes dela Nuit" )A critic noticed that the film the young Jew shows to his friend ,a shy boy under his mom's thumb, (one of the other boys even uses the word "minion" )features only male natives;their relationship is certainly homosexual, even if the repressed young man cannot take the plunge. This is really a lost generation, the generation who will be sacrificed in another dirty war in Algeria. The last pictures ,even if WW3 will not happen , pack a real wallop and are not telling the audience "we've had a narrow escape" but "watch out it's not over,it has just begun"

those parents are in fact no more stereotypes than Nicholas Ray's families in "rebel without a cause" .when Philippe screams "Mom ! please help me" behind her locked door ,he is not more ridiculous than Dean or Wood in the American movie.

Best scene: the killing of Daniel.Remembering what his crazy father said about the Jews ,in his black raincoat ,Jean does what the Gestapo used to do ten years before.

For this is a film noir, full of despair and pessimism;Cayatte's most complex work, admired by Bergman and Bunuel,it has worn remarkably well, just because it is a dated work:unique.

Review :

And justice for no one.

At first sight,Duvivier seems to follow in André Cayatte's footsteps. At the time, the latter director had launched a crusade against all the miscarriages of justice and had begun to champion any good cause going. But further acquaintance shows this:"l'affaire Maurizius" is a Duvivier movie .In Cayatte's movies, the problems are finally generally solved: in "Nous Sommes Tous Des Assassins" ,René was granted a pardon,in "Les Risques du Métier" ,the schoolteacher was rehabilitated.Even when the story turns black ("Le Glaive et la Balance" or "Justice est Faite") ,Cayatte " manages to limit the damage" so to speak. One should note that the young lead ,Jacques Chabassol, was part of Cayatte's "Avant le Deluge" (1953).

In "l'Affaire Maurizius",no one was saved:the judge has lost his son who is ashamed of his father ,the son has lost all his illusions, the gorgeous reluctant femme fatale has turned into a prematurely aged lady, her former lover is now living on the fringes of society, and the chastised innocent ......his fate is sealed as soon as the film begins...

....because,when the movie begins,"L'Affaire Maurizius" is an old one everybody wants to forget. That an innocent man may have spent seventeen years in jail does not seem to move the bourgeois judge (Charles Vanel),jealous of his privileges.Little by little, through flashbacks, scenes of the past resurfaces again .The judge 's son believes in justice and wants to save the prisoner(Daniel Gélin)who was "burried alive" .But Waremme (Anton Walbrook) tries to explain to him that the society scoffs at the law:while he is talking to the desperate young man,two dancers appear as shadow graphs on the window. This is the key to the film and to Duvivier's black world.

"L'Affaire Maurizius" is wrapped in mystery: all the flashbacks are filmed in places which seem secret and where a danger seems impending. The film sets are bare when they depict the past, emphasizing the characters who, unfortunately, with the exception of Vanel, sometimes display a tendency to overact. This misty atmosphere will emerge again in later works such as "Marianne de Ma Jeunesse" or "La Chambre Ardente".

Some objections to "l'Affaire Maurizius" remain: overacting (Anton Walbrook verges on ridicule),and Madeleine Robinson's underwritten part:she barely appears ten minutes whereas she plays a pivotal role in the screenplay. Her relationship with her younger sister (Eleonora Rossi-Drago) is only skimmed over whereas it is essential to the plot.

However, like almost all the movies Duvivier made ,it is a must: his pessimism leaves the viewer no hope : the last scene could be subtitled "out of the blue ... and into the black ,they give you this but you pay for that, and once you're gone you can never come back.." (Neil Young)

The girl is later found murdered and Manning is picked up by Scotland Yard for questioning and is later arrested and charged with murder. The trial is scheduled for London's Old Bailey. Manning's wife, Jill, convinced he is innocent, fights for and wins the sympathy of Council-for-the-Defense Peter Tanner, and he is opposed at the trial by his father, prosecuting-attorney Geoffrey Tanner. The trail is presided over by Justice Harrington, whose wife is in the hospital undergoing an operation. It soon becomes evident, following the testimony of prosecution-witness Horace Clifford, that the evidence points to Manning's guilt. During a recess, Peter Tanner sees Clifford outside the courthouse, giving candy to a young girl. Farr identifies the candy as being the same brand as that found on the murdered girl. The judge's wife has died, but the trial resumes with Tanner recalling ...

Dickie Attenborough on Song

I have awarded this film 7/10 and was surprised as a 67 year old regular viewer of films that I had not seen this long neglected title on TV before.I was given this Christmas from my wife about 12 movies of my choosing after visiting my favourite contact of rare dvds in North London.I was attracted to this title by the inclusion in the cast of actress Cathy O'Donnell who won acclaim as a newcomer acting in "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946), playing the young fiancé then wife of a U.S.seaman (Harold Russell) who actually lost both his wrists in WW11.

There is no point giving the plot again but my wife & I both thought the mother was totally naive and not a little stupid allowing her very young daughter to roam over bomb sites rather than being escorted to school. However since I was 8 in 1954 I can state there was a much more casual approach by parents to child safety then like climbing trees, playing on bomb & building sites, walking by canals and walking home from school alone.Perhaps it was the effect of living through the war.Of course the 1954 British Board of Film censors would never have allowed a certificate for a film portraying murderous, psychotic paedophilia on cinema screens. Also in my DVD collection is Graham Greene's "Brighton Rock"(1949) which shows the depth of roles Dickie Attenborough could play. Here he plays an innocent cabbie in the wrong place & time who gets accused of the little girl's murder. To solve why Cathy O'Donnell has an American accent she plays Dickie's Canadian wife in this movie. She believes in her husband and fights to get him the best legal counsel for his defence. The real killer was spotted by my wife.

Once there he meets again Donna Cottrell (Barbara Britton), whom he was about to marry a year ago until she learned that she wasn't the widow she thought she was. Her husband (Bruce Bennett), had been a prisoner and wasn't dead, and showed up before the wedding and more or less put a damper on the whole proceedings. He is the base doctor and also keeps a wary eye on his wife and Brady. Not a bad idea considering the short period of grief she went through, after being informed he was dead, before heading for the altar with Brady. But Bruce Bennet, as was par for the course for characters Bennett usually played, does the right thing and gets himself blown up by an enemy bomb (and is certified real dead this time), thereby ensuring the two top-billed ...

Awful

Clichéd, trite, stereotyped. Also, in the copy I saw, almost unwatchably fuzzy- the 3D showing through, perhaps? But the worst bit is the splicing in of stock footage of vaguely relevant bits of hardware. One expects all tanks in movies of this era to be American, but seeing good 'ol all American boys being shelled by a Sherman still jars. But the funniest errors are in the aircraft. Four US jet fighters (P-80's) twice become piston engined P-51's in close up, for example. But best of all a strafing enemy "Yak/Russian" fighter with a piston engine (and a devilish oriental pilot in close up) becomes a jet-powered P-80 (which only the US used) dropping napalm before reverting to a piston engine for the rest of the attack. Masters of disguise, evidently. On the interpersonal front watch for almost every 50's cliché, including "but I had to go back to him, he's wonderful", "I'm a hard-bitten infantryman", "you ran away, you coward", and probably if you look hard enough someone in a flying saucer. Not watchable. Can I have that bit of my life back, please?

Pretty Bad Hedy!

I absolutely adore Hedy Lamarr. When I first saw her face in a black and white movie on TV, way back, in the 1950's, I was transfixed by what I saw. Since then, no female in the history of movies, has surpassed her great beauty; Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner came close. It never mattered that she was not a great actress. Elizabeth Taylor, as a Hollywood insider gained some acclaim as an actress, in some pretty impressive roles; but ultimately bit the dust, in films like 'Cleopatra', 'The Sandpiper', 'Boom', 'The Comedians', and many, many more. 'Amante di Paride, L'' was a mess of a film. Much of Hedy's money went into this film, but the film was doomed by its very premise; and certainly Hedy could never have done anything with such a horrible script, and stupid story! I felt more sad than anything, because I always thought Hedy did not end up with the right directors, or the best scripts. This movie was pleasing enough on the eyes; but otherwise an assault to the other senses. This is not the way I prefer to remember Hedy.

For Romy

It's always a pleasure to see the sadly missed Romy Schneider in her early films ,before the international stardom in the wake of the Sissi trilogy. She's not at the top the bill,(the star being Lili Palmer, back from the USA,who would team up again with Schneider in Radvanyi's "Mädchen in Uniform" (1958)),but her part is more important than of that of the leading lady. She portrays a teenager from a chic family who snubs their black sheep ,the owner of a circus (one of her uncles). But the young girl is not prepared to accept it: this circus draws her and she really feels like becoming part of the troupe. It's a musical and I must admit the songs are not really my cup of tea.But Romy and the lovely colors are pleasant.

Review :

Life can be a dream in prison but a nightmare when you get out...

"Neorealist" comedy from Rossellini with the unimitable Toto as a barber who has a hard time adjusting back to society after serving 22 years in prison for a crime of passion.

What's great about this film is the strong theme behind the story. When you're locked away for a long time the real world becomes a dreamlike vision of a paradise. Paradoxically, the world can be the least tolerant place to those just released from prison.

Toto's comedy works wonderfully to create a man that experiences this disillusionment even up to the point where the very reasons he had for the crime of passion 22 years ago are questioned.

It's not a masterpiece: some sequences are included for no apparent reason and add nothing to the film, but a good idea, great casting (especially minor parts), good use of dramatic or realistic elements to make the comedy parts seem less "sweet" and, of course, the great Toto make watching this one worth your while.

NEW FACES of 1952 has a backstage structure imposed on it of the cast requiring cash in order for the show to continue; and two cast members being in love, against the wishes of the girl's Texan father. The cast mainly featured Ronnie Graham, Alice Ghostley, Robert Clary and Eartha Kitt. Additional cast members included June Carroll, Virginia DeLuce, Paul Lynde, Bill Mullins, Rosemary O'Reilly, Allen Conroy, Jimmy Russell, George Smiley, Polly Ward, Carol Lawrence, Johnny Lavery, Elizabeth Logan, Faith Burwell and Clark Ranger. The words and music were "mostly" by Ronny Graham, Arthur Siegel, June Carroll, Sheldon Harnick and Michael Brown, with additional contributions from Murray Grand, Ellisse Boyd, Alan Melville, Herbert Farjeon (who gave Joyce Grenfell her start in revues), Francis LeMarque and Peter DeVries. The sketches were written by Ronny Graham, "Melvin" Brooks, Paul Lynde, Luther Davis and John Cleveland. The numbers included: C'est Si Bon Eartha Kitt Meet the Senate Paul Lynde, Ronny Graham & Others Lucky Pierre Robert Clary Penny Candy ? Boston Beguine Alice Ghostley Love is a Simple Thing Robert Clary, Earthy Kitt Famous Southern Writer Ronny Graham Time for Tea Alice Ghostley & Others Alouette Robert Clary Santa, Baby Eartha Kitt Waltzing in Venice ? MEET THE SENATE was a senate investigation into jazz, with Ronny Graham in a zoot suit. PENNY CANDY is a heart tugging song by a bejeweled lady thinking back to her childhood when a piece of penny candy could make her happy as nothing in her rich life does now. BOSTON BEGUINE is a famous Sheldon Harnick number which Alice Ghostley really shines in. I couldn't figure out who the "famous Southern author" was supposed to be - Tennessee Williams; Truman Capote (the character's name is Kaput). TIME FOR TEA is a sad lament of missed opportunities in youth which lead to becoming two old maids. TAKE OFF YOUR MASK is Ronny Graham importuning Alice Ghostley to remove her mask at a ball in Vienna, but when he pulls it off, he begs her to put it back on and dashes away on a gondola. MR. CANKER IN DARKEST AFRICA is Paul Lynde in bandages and on crutches, narrating his unfortunate experiences on a recent trip to Egypt. I'M IN LOVE WITH MISS LOGAN is Robert Clary as a young boy with a crush on his teacher and not even knowing her first name. PICKPOCKET is a skit in which Paul Lynde is an unsuccessful pickpocket who is disappointed in his son, Ronny Graham, who plays baseball and gets A's on his report card, and doesn't seem to want to follow him into the family business. MONOTONOUS is Eartha Kitt as a femme fatale, bored with her life even though she "made Johnny Ray smile for me; a camel walked a mile for me."

On A Sticky Wicket

Certainly not one of Ratigans best screenplays. Not really helped by the casting of the 60 year old Jack Warner as a test cricketer in his forties. There are some really odd things about this film.Warner inviting to dinner one of the match umpires, the day before he bats.Later going into a pub at 1030pm,albeit just to romance Brenda Bruce who is about 25 years younger than him. They seem more like grandfather and granddaughter than lovers. Then there is a batsman who is out sauntering about the dressing room in a tie and suit. All very archaic.Good to see many of the heroes of the 1953 ashes winning team,Dennis Compton,Len Hutton and Jim Laker. How we could have done with them in Australia.

Three women

A portmanteau movie, made of three sketches flouting chronology ,since the first segment takes place just after WW2 whereas the final segment takes us back to,so to speak ,Aristophane .The main thread is " women through the war' as a man whose face we never see warns us:"you don't know me,just call me destiny!I want you to meet three women :Elizabeth,a victim of the war,Jeanne, who made war and Lysistrata, who fought against the war."The connection between the segments is somewhat tenuous though.

Segment one :"Elizabeth" a routine military melodrama ,"to each his own " style ,the short has emotion and sensitivity going for it;it was one of Claudette Colbert's few European parts (her most famous here is Madame DE Montespan in Sacha Guitry's " Si Versailles M'Etait Conté ) and she gives a restrained performance, displaying a quivering sensitiveness .Colbert Portrays a war widow, coming to Italy to take the remains of her husband killed in a small village where a peasant (Eleonora Rossi-Drago)gave him a shelter. There's a good chemistry between the American and the Latin actress and Marcello Pagliero's directing is effective when it does not succumb to some clichés such as the stormy night(s).Prologue and epilogue in the cemetery are a nice tribute to the American soldiers killed in action .And this line of Colbert is moving: "his father will be near him".

Segment two :"Jeanne" :you've guessed it ,the Jeanne in question is the maid of Orleans ,who else?one of the greatest tales of French history told and told and told and TOLD.So it is to Jean Delannoy's credit to spare us Domremy, the king in Chinon,Orleans,Reims ,Rouen ,Reims and the stake .Delannoy 's story which happens in a couple of hours is the beginning of the end when Jeanne had her moments of doubt and fear .Charles The Seventh had almost let her down and she would have to continue the fight with a handful of soldiers .Delannoy's directing, which the Nouvelle Vague trashed in a shameful way,is up to scratch and the dreary landscape (created in studio) reflects Joan's debacle .The lines by Aurenche and Bost show Jean Anouilh's influence ("L'Alouette" ,his play about Joan was staged the year before). But Delannoy was a believer and when Joan is about to give up,she becomes a miracle worker:a baby ,dead before christening ,to his mother's great despair ,comes back to life for a short while in the heroine's arms.

The main problem is the choice of the actress:Michèle Morgan,34 at the time, was twice Joan's age and it shows !She was obviously too old for the part and Otto Preminger did not make the same mistake with Jean Seberg.A moment of real happiness: fabulous Andrée Clément plays the small part of the mother ;she had already teamed up with Morgan and Delannoy ("La Symphonie Pastorale" ) :in her memoirs ,Morgan speaks highly of her co-star :" La Symphonie Pastorale" belongs to her ,it's her film, not mine"

Segment three:"Lysistrata".It's a big disappointment, mainly when so many great names are involved :Christain -Jaque,his then-wife Martine Carol,Raf Vallone and Henri Jeanson ! It's the first time I've found the writer's lines crude and witless .Jeanson was a pacifist ,his anti-militarism was famous, and he was the man who could tell the tale of Lysistrata ,a hippie-before-time ,who urges men to make love not war .But the actors overplay and are almost unbearable ,left by director Christian-Jaque to their own devices .A farce which is not funny at all.If at least they had borrowed from Guitry! The plot:Lysistrata urges Greek women to refuse to give themselves to their husbands till they do not declare peace!A good subject but a bad treatment and an anti-climax.You can leave after "Jeanne",you will not miss a lot!

Review :

FORGET STORY, CONCENTRATE ON THE MUSIC

In 1953 composer Theo Mackeben died; he was a very good composer of songs, light (film) music, serious music etc.; he was very important for the German cinema in the 30's and 40's.

Hardly surprising then that a film about or around him would be made. However, this film is centered around the music of Mackeben, but - as the credits state - not the life of Mackeben is portrayed. In stead the "bio" has been replaced by a story about an invented composer who composes the music of Mackeben; the script is that bad that words fail to describe it, let us hope that Mackeben had a more interesting life and certainly wife. The cast tries hard to make something out of it, but to no avail. Ingrid Stenn, as the composer's wife, has nothing else to do than to look worried. When the wife (separated in the meantime from her husband) does not want to reveal a difficult situation she is in and in the same conversation says that lately she has had no appetite for coffee (!), the viewer is of course aware of the situation - her conversation partner is not. Who ever wrote this scene must have had a bad case of caffeine poisoning.

If you are willing to forget the story and Hans Wolff's so-so direction as well (though he directs much better than in his first films), you still could have a wonderful time with Mackeben's music and the good performances of it. You also may want to indulge in game of association, like I did during watching:

Margot Hielscher superbly sings the title song and also the song "Frauen sind keine Engel" (incorporated in a nice revue number); this song she already sung in 1943 in the film with the same title and that was directed by Willi Forst (and I repeat what I wrote about Hielscher then: she might have been an angel herself, that voice!). And look who has a guest appearance as film director: Willi Forst for whom Hans Wolff formerly worked as editor and assistant-director. Forst refers to his own classic "Bel Ami" of 1939 and in his subtle and charming style sings the title song. You may want to find the association "Forst and the bare breasts" yourself.

His first films Hans Wolff made with Sonja Ziemann in the lead. In this film she has a guest appearance as ballet dancer and as far as I know, this film has given her the only opportunity to show herself in the profession before she turned to acting: that of ballet dancer. The production number for her may not be Hollywood standard, but it is very entertaining, well-danced and very imaginative. Other guest appearances are those of Zarah Leander (and what a fine lady she still is) and Kirsten Heilberg, whose performance of the second song (towards the end of the film) gave me shivers down my spine.

Of the cast I want to mention Georg Thomalla. This is a comedian I am not always to friendly of as he has the tendency not to keep himself in check. Here however he is charming and his acting (and thus the comedy he provides) is well-timed. He also has a song-and-dance number in which he gives a very good Maurice Chevalier impersonation.

All in all: I find this a very curious film that despite the terrible script, but thanks to the spirit of Mackeben entertained me enormously.
