Great early 50's movie

I remember seeing this as a14 year old in England when it was first released. It has stuck in my mind ever since. The combination of Gary Cooper's world weary persona, Dimitri Tiomkin's evocative score, the great rendition of the title song by Frankie Laine and the powerful sense of loss and what might have been all combine to make a fantastic couple of hours. One thought did occur when I watched it again last night was how old the characters all were... We take it for granted today that most roles are played by 25-35 year old actors (and actresses)that to see Cooper, Stanwyck, Quinn, Bond etc. brings one up with start. Lovely film, though, and I look forward to seeing it again.

Review :

Handsome film production of Verdi's classic Aida succeeds in making grand opera more accessible to the masses.

The whole point of making this film, one of the earliest and best international color releases of cinematic opera, was to make it more accessible to the masses. And it succeeded admirably in doing so. The general public would not sit still for a love story about two young exotic lovers in ancient Egypt if played by the typical 300 pound over 40 tenor and soprano with the vocal equipment to sing the glorious music properly. Hence the visual substitution of the beautiful principals (a young Loren, handsome Della Marra, and a slinky Ms. Maxwell)who make the story much more believable, giving those not familiar with the plot or the music a better chance at being wooed into the lovely arias who otherwise might not be. Altogether, an enchanting introduction to one of Verdi's great works. I remember seeing this when I was in junior high school and it certainly awakened my interest in opera, a form with which I was then not well acquainted. I still regard this film fondly and would recommend it highly to those who might appreciate the great music accompanied by better than average visuals. Luciano Della Marra was a standout as Radames, and unfortunately for audiences did not appear in any other films.

Oldie but still a goldie.

Have just sat down and re-watched this film with my 3 kids and can definitely say that they loved it. Although by this time in their careers Abbott & Costello's top movie double-act crown was being swiped by those new kids Martin & Lewis, this movie was a box office smash when first released and still holds up well today. The mixture of comedy and horror works a treat as it had done in " Meet Frankenstein" a number of years earlier and Karloffs performance adds real class to the tomfoolery on screen. Of course the Universal depiction of turn of the century London,( all fog shrouded streets and fish & chip shops ) leaves a lot to be desired,I think it adds to the films charm in much the same way as when used in the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes mysteries of the same period. Bud and Lou carry off their roles well and the romantic subplot seems not to intrude as much as in the boys earlier wartime comedies. All in all a good little film to be watched on a rainy Monday afternoon.

Katie's temper makes an inopportune appearance in the operating room when she is asked to work late after an already long shift to assist in the non-medical emergency surgery of Tony Brown, who got shot accidentally in the derrière while on a hunting trip. The emergency part of the surgery is that wealthy Tony is the major benefactor to the hospital to the tune of $100,000 per year, he who demanded immediate and quick attention to his injury. Katie's behavior in the operating room costs her her job on Tony's behest, and costs the hospital Tony's annual $100,000 ...

A View to an End....

This impressively silly film starts off with a bang with playboy Peter Lawford having a hunting accident which results in his getting buckshot in his tail. Bickering doctor Gig Young and nurse Jane Greer when not verbally sparring spend most of their screen time examining Lawford's derriere. Although this viewer is willing to concede that the aforementioned part of Lawford's anatomy may very well comprise that actor's greatest charm, the charm is not so great as to serve for the main focal point of an entire film especially when it is never even glimpsed by the audience. That notably absent and undoubtedly welcome sight alone could begin to atone for enduring nearly 80 minutes of Lawford's usual obnoxious urbanity and the total waste of both Young and Greer who are brought together by the end....Lawford's end, that is.

Review :

A nearly forgotten masterpiece of British 1950s charm and comedy

"Time Gentleman Please!" is honestly as good as Titfield Thunderbolt, Genevieve, or School For Scoundrels, even Whisky Galore. Rarely seen due to copyright and distribution disputes it has finally been released!

The film opens at the Ministry for Productivity and Industry (With Ian Carmichael - who else?), where we discover that Hayhoe, a little village in rural Essex, has 99.9% employment, and will be visited by noneless than the Prime Minister himself.

But this is not the main theme of the piece. We move quickly to the charmingly rural village of Hayhoe itself where the snooty council are discussing what to do about Dan Dance - the local colorful character and vagabond - played by Eddie Bryne in only his fourth film in terms of the upcoming visit. (Bryne went on to have a very long and prolific career and is probably most recognized as General Willard from all three early Star Wars movies.)

To tidy the place up Dan is placed as the sole proprietor of the local alms houses and then discovers.... well, you have to watch as see. the film is about Dan and his wonderful ways.

Fantastic charm to this, not unlike Jacques Tati's "Fête du Jour", the village and villagers, the ones who weren't professional actors, give this a wonderful timeless quality of stepping into a forgotten world. Above all though, it's genuinely funny, and I mean laugh out loud funny

  • great performances, excellent timing throughout, and unbelievably

charming; and one of the best plots in any British comedy: the twists and turns are great; without resorting to mania.

With Sid James, Dora Bryan, and Hermione Baddeley to name just a few you know you're in for a treat - and what a treat - this honestly is one of the best of its genre: a lovely, charming, funny British 1950s comedy, and not a mean word or bone in it a real "U" rated film of the sort that you will just wish they could make today... but how? And you'll wish you could be in the Swan at Hayhoe for a pint.

I've already added it to one of my favourite films of all time - and one of the top five British comedies - in a word: wonderful.

Good luck finding it - it's a travesty that it isn't seen more regularly - but if you're lucky enough to see it - do!

Superb study of psychotic killer and the race to subdue him

This is one of those true gems of a film that remind one of what the medium can accomplish. As we both follow the killer and the police who are trying to catch him, we are fascinated with and sympathetically interested in the man - a rare feat for both a screenwriter and director. Arthur Franz is superb as Andy, the psychologically disturbed misogynistic killer of brunette women. Franz made 56 films from 1948 to 1982 and here gives a superlative performance as the haunted young man. He is unable to deal with rejection and finds it constantly in every interaction with what seems a very hostile world (post-Korean War San Francisco - shot on location). He reaches out for help and is ignored. The film is a plea for tolerance, understanding and prevention of sexually offensive criminology and as such has a most intelligent screenplay. The direction by Edward Dmytryk is top notch and the Cinematography is superbly framed throughout. Shame on the Academy for giving it only a Best Story Oscar Nom - it deserved to be represented for Direction, Screenplay, Cinematography and Score. This is one to seek out and savor. A terrific accomplishment.

Review :

Opulent Visual Feast - Pity About the Colour!

A triumph of the old High Romantic style in French cinema - a style extinguished so brutally by Godard and the New Wave - this Raymond Bernard film of the Alexandre Dumas fils tear-jerker has some of the camp decorative frenzy of a Powell/Pressburger opera, Oh, Rosalinda! or Tales of Hoffmann. Every frame of it overflows with tasselled velvet, Venetian mirrors, plaster figurines and - as was only to be expected - vases of white camellias. As his film's visual climax, Bernard lays on the masked ball to end all masked balls. An orgy of sex, melodrama and delirious design.

Unfortunately for a film of such visual opulence, La Dame aux Camelias was

shot in Gevacolor - an atrocious cheapjack colour process that has faded badly over the years. Even the most lovingly restored print can show us no more than a shadow of what 50s audiences might have seen, let alone of what poor old Bernard intended!

Luckily, the non-visual elements are strong enough to make up for the washed-out colour. Micheline Presle is superbly touching as Marguerite Gautier, the dying courtesan who gets a last chance at love with a younger man. Her performance achieves a fine balance between the florid romanticism of Great Garbo (in George Cukor's 1937 Camille) and the cold-blooded cynicism of Isabelle Huppert (in Mauro Bolognini's 1980 True Story of the Lady of the Camellias). Of the three actresses, only Presle looks even remotely like Dumas' real-life model, the 19th century Paris courtesan Alphonsine du Plessis.

Roland Alexandre is absurdly handsome, if a trifle bland, as her young lover Armand. Far more drama is generated by Bernard's cynical eye for social ironies. Armand's staid father (Gino Cervi) carouses with two ladies of the night, shortly after lecturing poor Marguerite on her morals. A debt collector seizes a gilt mirror out of her hand as she lies dying. It is moments like these that stop La Dame aux Camelias from degenerating into sumptuously designed slush. Moments that not even Gevacolor can ruin!

Review :

Average Technicolor remake of a 1937 classic...the fight scenes are a big improvement here...

The 1937 film version, produced by David Selznick and starring Ronald Colman as Rudolf Rassendyll/King Rudolf V, Madeline Carroll as Princess Flavia, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as the villainous Rupert of Hentzau, is an escapist fantasy adventure classic in many respects. It's one of my all-time favorite stories and one of my favorite films to enjoy whenever I'm bored. Besides, the film inspired me to create written adventures of my own imaginary European country as a high school student.

Many years later the MGM studios decided to produce a Technicolor remake of the 1937 film. In few elements, such as in the production values and action scenes, it's an improvement. In most elements it's not.

Here we have a scene-for-scene remake that's virtually identical (even in the camera angles, dialog, and stirring music score by Alfred Newman) to the 1937 film except for the casting. And the casting is the weakest flaw here. Apart from Jane Greer in the Mary Astor role, we have Stewart Granger who has the required athleticism but lacks Ronald Colman's urbane panache in order to act regal. Deborah Kerr's Princess Flavia is a one-dimensional character here. The love scenes and chemistry between Granger and Kerr seems forced and unconvincing. The suave James Mason lacks Douglas Fairbank's young, devilish charm as Rupert of Hentzau, which made Fairbanks so enjoyable to watch in the 1937 version. The supporting characters, Colonel Zapt (Louis Calhern) and Fritz (Robert Coote), are reduced to mere puppets here and lack the buddy charm that C. Aubrey Smith and David Niven contained in the 1937 version.

Even worse, MGM contract director Richard Thorpe captained the film. Being an average director who always relied on shooting as few takes as possible and caring little for artistic temperament or actors' performances, his vast film work was only average and mostly unsatisfactory. He was never one of my favorite classic film directors.

However, it is the magnificent Technicolor production design, as well as the improved final duel between Rassendyll and Rupert, that makes the remake worth watching. Thanks to the bright lighting required for shooting in Technicolor, the night scenes are easier to watch this time. Even better, the exciting final duel is much more elaborately and imaginatively staged this time, while the two opponents in the 1937 version only looked as if they were fencing someone off-camera in close-ups and relying on stunt men in their long shots. Next to THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) THE MARK OF ZORRO (1940), and THE SEA HAWK (1940), this one ranks as one of my favorite film duels. However, despite the extravagant settings, the period look goes a little too far...the men smoke ladies' cigarettes and in two scenes Granger wears the most effeminate fur overcoat I've ever seen!

A beautiful Technicolor production and an awesome duel scene within...but after watching this version it's like you've just ate a slice of French silk chocolate pie, which is rich and filling but lacks the substance and nutritional value of a healthier dark chocolate bar.

Stick to the 1937 version, please.

where color (and Power) counts the most

Pony Soldier is what you could call a Canadian western (about Mounties and which takes place in Canada) where what counts the most is the visual beauty. You have to remember this film was made before color TV, and when a lot of films where still made in black and white, so it was quite a thrill to watch the beautiful Canadian scenery, the red uniforms of the Mounties, also Indians impeccably dressed. The story about a Mountie's efforts to pacify the Indians, which had taken hostages, also flows easily, quite predictable, with no violent emotions to prevent you from enjoying the colors on the screen. Cameron Mitchell is so well made up as an Indian, that he is unrecognizable.

Both men have written and done much worse, I admit, mainly in the second half of their career, but if you leave your blinkers behind and watch the film for what it is, you will derive much pleasure from this ride with Pierre Verger, also known as "Monsieur Taxi".

Michel Simon is, as usual, in fine form in a part that fits him like a glove, probably written by Halain with him in mind. He shines as this typical Paris cab driver. Grumbling, like too many of his colleagues (this is no cliché: I personally experienced the thing more than once) and abusive, but once at home a good family man concerned about his next of kin. Several real-life features have been given to the fiction character, which enhances its credibility: like Michel Simon, Pierre is bad-tempered but honest(demanding Simon was never satisfied with what he was doing), is a bit of an anarchist (policemen, including his own brother-in-law, are his pet aversion), and loves animals (a she-monkey in real life while here, it is a dog... sharing his hostility to any form of power). And he is not alone, a host of the wonderful character actors of the time are there on duty, from Pauline Carton to Jeanne Fusier-Gir to Paul Demange, including an excellent Jean Brochard, memorable as a henpecked husband blowing a fuse after fifteen years of frustration. Among the younger actors, Roland Alexandre and Monique Darbaud play very naturally.

The background of this comedy is interesting too. Historically speaking first as, thanks to the title taxi, we cross Paris up and down and this is moving since this is the capital in 1952 and God knows that it has changed since that time. Secondly, it is pleasant to see how carefully Halain and Hunebelle observe their characters as they live their everyday lives in the social context of the time. Nearly all proletarian types, they struggle to make ends meet in old, little comfortable flats. In his humble way, "Monsieur Taxi" can be regarded as a slice of life in post-war France.

All this does not prevent the film from being very funny, thanks to top-notch dialogs delivered to perfection by excellent actors. To make a long story short, "Monsieur Taxi", even if it does not break new ground in the direction field,is well worth the ride.

Delightfully wicked satire of British industry

Alec Guinness is a genius who is beyond geekiness, he's obsessive. He lives in poverty and obscurity, he takes dead-end jobs that barely pay the rent, all so that he can complete his research and present the weary post-WWII world with a miracle: A fabric that will never get dirty, wrinkle, or wear out. Nobody will ever have to do laundry, iron, or spend for new clothes ever again. Of course, when he tries to start production not only do the captains of industry realize that it'll put them out of business, so do the unions. Chaos ensues, to say the least.

A very funny film, in that particularly witty, intelligent, satirical, slightly evil style found in the best post-war British films. This film is worthy to stand with "Kind Hearts and Coronets" and "The Lavender Hill Mob", all made by Ealing Studios and starring the subtle Alec Guinness.

very good early Bergman

While this movie was not exactly earth-shaking, it was a well-made film that held my attention. It's about 4 lady friends who are waiting for their husbands to meet them at their summer retreat. While waiting, they begin to tell their innermost secrets about their marriages--particularly the details of boredom or infidelity. The most memorable one of these is the final segment with the husband and wife stuck in the elevator, though they all were well acted and interesting. Those who are great fans of the later depressing work of Bergman may find this movie a bit of a letdown, it should appeal to those in the audience who want greater depth in the plot without the hopelessness that accompanies many later Bergman films.

Charles Pellegrin, 40-year-old country doctor, buys a practice in Arles, a provincial town near Marseille. In five years, he has a large practice and a lovely (but more efficient than passionate) wife, when he meets spectacularly sexy, sensuous Martine, who seduces him. Soon, he's honoring that old French custom of keeping a mistress. At first Martine brings romance, then passion into his life...then black jealously and despair.

French Neo-Realism

Considering Neo-Realism was really invented by a French writer-director, Marcel Pagnol (who also invented "poetic realism" in the process), this is its natural legacy. It could have been called "Adultery - French Provincial Style". It is remarkable for many reasons, not the least of which is Fernandel's dramatic turn as a two-timing husband giving in to temptation with a kind of childish, innocent glee and Françoise Arnoul's affirmation as a typically French sex symbol representing everything "wrong" with the new generation. It is realistic in that it doesn't over-dramatize the sexual aspects but delves rather seriously in the social and psychological consequences of adultery. It is also shot on location in Arles. The production values, direction, music (by Paul "Mademoiselle de Paris" Durand) and acting (including a good part for Sylvie) are beyond compare. Highly recommended and worth more than all the New Wave films combined...
